- 06/15/1775: General George Washington was appointed Major General of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress, after being nominated by John Adams. He served in that capacity until 1783.
- 04/12/1861: The Battle of Fort Sumter began near Charleston, South Carolina, which marked the start of the Civil War. It ended the next day when the Confederates successfully overtook the Fort.
- 07/01/1863: The battle of Gettysburg begins in Gettysburg, PA. General Robert E. Lee lead the Confederates while General Meade lead the Union. The battle lasts until July 3rd and resulted in over 50,000 casualties. It is also remembered as a turning point in the Civil War.
