James Garfield was the first former College President to become the U.S. President. As President, Garfield continued Hayes' movement to clean up the civil service system.

Garfield was shot by a disgruntled civil service employee hopeful. Garfield died 79 days later. Vice President Arthur took over after Garfield's death.
