Major Events During Presidency

  • 05/24/1883: The Brooklyn Bridge, a 1,595 feet long bridge costing $16 million (in 1883 dollars) connecting the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, officially opened. At the time, it was the world’s longest suspension bridge. It is held together with 5,296 bound-steel cables. It was designed by John A. Roebling and took 14 years to build.
