Major Events During Presidency
- 03/29/1961: The 23rd amendment passed, allowing for representation of Washington, D.C. in the Electoral College. Washington, D.C. is allowed the same number of electors it would have if it was a state, except it is not allowed to have more electors than the least populous state.
- 04/17/1961: 1,500 CIA-trained Cuban exiles launched the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in a failed attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro.
- 05/25/1961: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy gave a speech to Congress. "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him back safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."
- 08/13/1961: Construction began on the Berlin Wall. The wall existed for nearly 30 years as a physical sign of the great divide between the communists and free-market philosophies. Soon after the wall came down, so did the cold war and communism.
- 10/14/1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis hit a climax as American U-2 spy planes photograph missile bases being built in Cuba.

- 04/05/1955: Richard J. Daley was elected mayor of Chicago, IL. He served 21 years as mayor, and was a Democratic party leader. He was well known for his involvement in national politics, especially his influence with Presidents Kennedy and LBJ.
- 11/22/1963: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated, in Dallas, Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was charged with the crime, however, two days later Jack Ruby murdered him.
