Major Events During Presidency
- 03/30/1981: In the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., John Hinckley, Jr. shot and wounded four people, including then-current President Ronald Reagan. Hinckley had a history of mental illness, including an obsession with Jody Foster, and stalking of former President Jimmy Carter.
- 04/15/1986: President Ronald Reagan ordered air strikes on Libya. The strikes were intended to send a message to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and reduce Libya's ability to support and train terrorists. The pre-emptive attack on terrorists was heavily opposed across most of Europe. The attacks were not highly successful, yielding in the death of at least 15 civilians. Gaddafi survived the attack unharmed, but his 15 month old adopted daughter was killed.
- 06/12/1987: Ronald Reagan delivered an inspiring speech at the Berlin wall. Part of the speech includes, "General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
